Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Depart Brisbane International Airport for Denpasar, Bali.
Pickup by our guide and driver Esnawan in time for dinner at Jimbaran.
Stay at a nearby Hotel.

Day 2

Breakfast out our hotel and a 9:30am pickup by Esnawan for a road trip across Bali to the ferry at Gilimanuk across to Ketapang in Java. From there we’ll drive onwards to our hotel near Ijen (Grand Harvest, Ketapang Indah or Banyuwangi Hotel) enjoying the lush scenery along the way.

Day 3

Today is an early 3:00am wake up for 4:00am trek up Mt Ijen, hopefully in time for sunrise. We have plenty of time for photos and exploration and a freshly brewed tea or coffee. After the descent down we will enjoy our take away breakfast from the hotel. We will then transfer to the Ijen View Hotel and refresh ourselves. In the afternoon we have some down time to sit and relax or go and visit the nearby coffee plantation and Mini Niagara waterfall.

Day 4

Day four is a great road trip from East Java to Central Java to the little mountain village of Cemoro Lawang - the location of the amazing Mount Bromo.
We arrive in time for a little bit of exploring on foot and a first look at Mount Bromo at sunset viewing from Mt Metigen near our hotel.
Tonight we will enjoy dinner and stay at Lava View Lodge.

Day 5

3:00am wake up for 4:00am departure for Bromo sunrise from Pananjakan Prau or Widodaren lookout points. We will travel in a restored Landcruiser Jeep for about an hour up to the lookout, then we’ll walk another 20 minutes to the best lookout to appreciate sunrise over Mount Bromo and Java’s highest and most active volcano, Mount Semeru, in the background.
After sunrise our jeep will take us back down to ground level so that we can climb Bromo. Our jeep will drop us off at the Luhur Poten Hindu Temple. From here, we will walk for about 20 minutes across the luna like volcanic ash landscape to reach the stairs up to the crater of the volcano. Another 10 minute walk and we are on top of Bromo and you can admire the crater.
Take a scarf or dust mask for all the dust. You really need this!
Stay at Lava View Lodge.

Day 6

Today we will leave early for the four-hour drive to Surabaya were we’ll say goodbye to Esnawan. We will have time to explore this unique part of Indonesia’s second largest city and sample the amazing street food.
Tonight we’ll stay at the luxurious and historical Hotel Majapahit Surabaya MGallery.

Day 7

After an early breakfast we’ll take a Nam Air flight from Surabaya to Pangkalan Bun in Central Kalimantan.
Here we’ll be picked up by our guide Arif from Orangutan Applause and drive to the riverside port of Kumai to board our Klotok.
This afternoon we will cruise the Sekonyer River up to Tanjung Harapan Camp for a 20 minute walk through the jungle to see the Orangutan feeding at 3:00pm.
From there we will continue cruising upriver to find a nice spot to tie up for the night.
Night one on the boat.

Day 8

Rise with the sun for breakfast on the boat as we continue upriver to Sungai Buluh where we will meet a local Park Ranger who will guide us deep into the jungle on a trek. The trek is around 7km and will take three to three and a half hours taking in amazing jungle landscapes and countless unique plant and wildlife species. But the real treat is our return voyage - a local guide will row us out along a jungle-filled creek in a traditional canoe back to our boat. For those who would rather not partake in the jungle trek, you can relax around the Klotok (there’s lots of wildlife) and take the canoe trip up the creek to pick-up the trekkers.
Night two on the boat.

Day 9

Breakfast at sunrise. Continue cruising upriver to Camp Leakey and the legendary Orangutan Rehabilitation Camp, where Professor Birute Galdikas started her studies in 1971, and the Orangutan feeding at 10:00am.
We’ll return to the boat for lunch and a bit of relaxing.
The afternoon will be spent exploring the rainforest searching for wildlife and amazing varieties of plants.
We will then enjoy a leisurely sunset cruise downriver to Pondok Ambung were we will tie-up for the night.
Tonight we will be guided by a national park ranger on a night walk in the jungle at Sungai Bulu Park.
Sungai Buluh Peat Protected Forest is one of the protected peat forest areas in Jambi Province which experienced severe forest and land fires in 2019.
Return to the boat for dinner.
Night three on boat.

Day 10

Our last sunrise breakfast on the boat. Today we will cruise down the river spotting wildlife on our way to Pondok Tanggui and our last Orangutan feeding station at 9:00am. From there we can explore the forest for a while before making our way back to the boat for lunch. After lunch we will travel a little bit further downriver to Rimba Lodge.
